Children’s Hospital & Medical Center (Children’s) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine (UNMC College of Medicine) seek a strategic and collaborative academic physician-scholar executive to serve as Chair, Department of Pediatrics of UNMC College of Medicine, Pediatrician-in-Chief of Children’s and Executive Director of the Child Health Research Institute (Chair and PIC) with the upcoming retirement of the current Chair and Pediatrician-in-Chief, John Sparks, MD who has led the department since January 2008. Nominations for this mission critical leadership role are being sought and your confidential recommendation of a colleague/associate who is interested/qualified is welcome.
Children’s is one of the country’s premier independent, freestanding children’s hospitals, and the UNMC College of Medicine is a highly prestigious, widely respected and academically productive center for the education and training of physicians, development of investigative scientists and researchers, graduate and undergraduate medical education programs, basic and translational research initiatives, and overall clinical excellence. Children’s is a vibrant, cutting-edge children’s hospital affiliated with the UNMC College of Medicine and Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. Children’s consists of 145-beds, and the hospital has been caring for children since 1948. It is the only full-service pediatric specialty healthcare center in Nebraska. The UNMC College of Medicine has held a unique and vital role in Nebraska for more than 135 years. It is a member of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, which is Nebraska’s only public academic health sciences center.
The Department of Pediatrics is now the UNMC College of Medicine’s second largest department. Faculty and staff are based in 20 divisions, generally organized along subspecialty lines. There are currently 150 faculty and 72 UNMC staff within the department. The Child Health Research Institute was established in June 2017 and is a collaboration between UNMC and Children’s. The institute will provide a base for an already established and growing research program within the 10-year old affiliation between Children’s and UNMC. The institute further strengthens the mutual commitment between Children’s and UNMC in research and will help to define a roadmap for the future to ensure the two organizations continue successfully in research for many years to come. Children’s and UNMC College of Medicine seek a dynamic academic leader with a broad vision for the provision of children’s health care services and with a national research reputation to guide the Department’s growth and development as a regional, national and international leader in medical education, research, patient care and service.
Candidates must possess an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent degree and board certification. The successful candidate must also demonstrate: 1) progressive administrative leadership experience in an integrated academic medical center environment, 2) national recognition for achievement in research, educational and clinical pursuits that would warrant appointment as a faculty member at the professorial rank, and 3) the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in the department, at Children’s and across multiple disciplines. As the administrative leader for the Department, candidates should have exceptional communication skills, a high degree of professionalism, considerable financial acumen and a clear understanding of what it takes to help grow market share and advance all academic missions in a competitive environment. Lastly, it is expected that the successful candidate will possess a clear vision for advancing medical education, scholarship, and clinical care in the midst of a changing health care landscape. We seek individuals with strong emotional and social intelligence, and a demonstrated ability to connect with others in a meaningful way at all levels of an organization.
