Job Summary Provides individual and group age-appropriate developmental, emotional, and psychosocial support to children and their families within the pediatric service line. Strives to minimize distress associated with hospitalization consistent with established treatment objectives. Provides consultation with professional staff in assessment, intervention and evaluation. The staff member must demonstrate knowledge to assess the psychosocial needs of children and families, and to provide appropriate therapeutic relationships and activities to meet a host of unique individual needs during hospitalization. The need to demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in providing individualized developmental support for infants in the context of their families is essential. The individual must possess the ability to work autonomously in pediatrics, NICU, and in pediatric out patient areas while participating as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
Plans, prepares, and implements age appropriate individualized treatment plans based on assessment of development, temperament, coping style, medical plan, and available social supports and documents in medical record.
Prepares and educates children and families for diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures through use of appropriate coping strategies; supervises and coordinates therapeutic, medical, and developmental play activities.
Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team to integrate the Child Life Program; documents observations in patient chart to ensure ongoing availability of updated patient information.
Functions as advocate for patients and families to promote positive healthcare attitudes and experiences; represents and communicates with others to improve awareness.
Develops and provides ongoing in-service education for pediatric and NICU staff members to further skills, knowledge, and competency.
Plans, organizes, and leads groups related to creative expression, self healing, understanding, and cooperative play.
Orients and supervises activities of assigned Child Life students and volunteers providing timely feedback and review to ensure provision of appropriate therapeutic care.
Responds to crisis situations appropriately, effectively, and calmly to ensure ongoing safety of patients and others.
Maintains professional and technical competency through regular participation in a variety of educational programs and in-services, reviewing relevant professional publications and materials, and participating in professional societies to ensure ongoing awareness and understanding of most current methodologies, practices, and philosophies as applied to patient care.
Develops recommendations for equipping and maintaining a supportive child oriented environment.
Performs formal and informal assessments of infant neurobehavioral function and adaptation using the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program.
Performs formal and informal assessments of parent/family adaptation and development in the NICU.
