Litigation Counsel serves as a system wide expert of best practices in healthcare and claims management. Litigation counsel is accountable for providing legal services as both counsel of record and monitoring counsel. Litigation counsel provides legal advice and guidance in specialized areas of healthcare litigation as well as guidance and advice on general healthcare matters as needed.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of substantive and procedural law and ability to apply that knowledge to legal negotiation and formal litigation.
Knowledge of domestic and international laws, regulations and court rules governing the process and procedure of an action involving the Court and the ability to take action on the aspects of litigation that impact the business.
Demonstrates ability to interact professionally on all levels within and outside the organization.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree or Master's degree required; and Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree or L.L.B. (law) degree required. Must be licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania.
Minimum seven years of experience required actively working in the area of litigation, with emphasis on medical malpractice defense required.
Healthcare litigation experience required (e.g. professional liability, employment, premises liability, government investigations, payor appeals, and/or collection litigation, specifically in a healthcare setting).
Experience with healthcare operations and claims preferred.
Experience presenting to clinical or operational departments on litigation and risk management preferred.
Experience with self-insurance program preferred.
Experience with licensing, risk managmeent, healthcare fraud and abuse, antitrust and government regulations preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSCIAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed in an office environment. Travel may be required. Accountable for satisfying all job specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.
