VUMC and the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP ) is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join a small group of developers and data analysts to maintain Coeus and related data systems. Coeus is a critical enterprise database that facilitates proposal development, proposal submission, and project reporting for all VUMC research teams. Coeus is legacy system, open-source, and heavily modified to meet the business needs of VUMC.
The Senior Data Engineer will take the lead organizing the Oracle database that supports the Coeus application, including data tables, and writing views, procedures, and functions. On a regular basis, the Senior Data Engineer will be responding to leadership requests for custom data reports that involve complex SQL queries or the combining and processing of Coeus data with data from other VUMC data systems. The Senior Data Engineer is also responsible for a schedule of regular data needs including quarterly and annual reporting of key metrics. The Senior Data Engineer is expected to acquire a working knowledge of stakeholder data needs over time and contribute to improvement efforts with suggestions and recommendations. This is not a DBA position responsible for backups, patches, or other administrator functions.
The Senior Data Engineer position replaces a retiring team member. It is our expectation that a successful candidate will learn from the retiring team member for a period of time before taking over full position responsibilities. This provides a significant opportunity to work closely with an experienced team member and receive support during the initial adjustment period. OSP IT Support is currently a remote-work team. We use project management software, version control, and flexible tools to stay connected and collaborate.
All OSP IT Support personnel, including the Senior Data Engineer perform help-desk functions and assist users with questions or problems regarding the use of Coeus and related data systems. This function is a team effort and frequently requires input from multiple IT Support team members and occasional coordination with other VUMC departments.
OSP IT support is a small, dynamic team with a collaborative approach. Our team has ownership of all phases of the product life cycle and operates as an independent unit. We have the flexibility to experiment with new techniques to achieve our missions of support, capacity-building, and data integrity. However, we are also part of the larger, supportive, and stable VUMC community, providing room for professional development and overall career growth. Lastly, the Senior Data Engineer is expected to contribute to departmental discussions around priorities, planning, user training, and many other team functions. Our team culture is collaborative, constructive, and supportive. We want to add team members who work best in this kind of environment.
